Copper IUD and Eczema
There’s a pretty niche internet community that believes copper IUDs are toxic. I saw a medical intuitive – see further down the “wacky ideas” list. She recommended I consider the link between the copper IUD and eczema and get it taken out.
I obviously checked to see if there was any research backing up her claim that copper IUDs can cause skin issues. It turns out very small studies suggest they can (here’s one from the ‘80s).
Because I was going to be trying for kids in 1-2 years anyway, I figured it was worth a shot to get it removed given the very slim potential link between the copper IUD and eczema. This was highly individualized to my situation. It didn’t change anything for my eczema, but my periods got lighter, so that was nice.
Unfortunately for me, I also have a titanium prosthesis in my arm from an old injury. From what I’ve read this can also cause skin rashes in some people. I certainly hope my eczema isn’t caused by this prosthesis, as I definitely can’t get it out. The IUD removal was at least a straightforward process.
Am I glad I got my IUD removed?
I’d say I’m neutral, but if it had worked I of course would have been thrilled.
You’ll have to talk to your medical provider about this one!
